Ohio Edison Gorge Hydroelectric Dam, Akron, Ohio
Client: Advanced Hydro |
Ohio Edison Gorge Hydroelectric Dam
Akron, Ohio
Hull partnered with Advanced Hydro Solutions to provide ecological, water quality, project management and Clean Water Act regulatory services for a proposed project to restore hydroelectric power generation to the Ohio Edison Gorge Dam on the Cuyahoga River in the City of Akron, Summit County, Ohio.
The Gorge Dam was originally commissioned as a hydroelectric dam in the 1920s, and after electrical generation ceased in the 1960s, the dam pool has since served as a cooling water intake for a coal power plant (now decommissioned) and as a recreational focus of the Gorge Metropark. The project will provide a renewable energy supply to nearby residential housing with no associated greenhouse gas emissions.
The client is seeking Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approval for the project. Hull provided ecological services including stream aquatic life use attainment, wetland delineation, endangered species surveys, and water quality sampling, and worked with another consultant to develop an aquatic habitat simulation to determine levels of power production that will sustain aquatic life in the Cuyahoga River. Hull also provided strategic guidance and technical services on Clean Water Act permitting and geotechnical and slope stability analysis.
