Hull || Services|| Environmental Monitoring
Hull provides permitting, design and environmental
monitoring services required to maintain regulatory compliance
for all media, including air, wastewater, storm water, ground
water and other regulated media. We also develop the plans
required to maintain compliance with applicable regulations
to document that the performance of engineered systems are
working or to identify, assess or correct
potential impacts.
Our ecological services complement our environmental
programs. Environs surrounding landfill properties sometimes
include surface water bodies, wetlands and/or protected habitats
and species. Our professional scientists are often called
upon to assess, delineate or monitor (and at times mitigate)
these environs as part of the landfill development, operation
and post closure programs. We have designed the final, end
use of landfill properties as parks and recreation areas,
as well as into areas that enhance or integrate the property
into the local land use plan or habitat in a sensible manner.
Ground-Water Monitoring
Federal, state, and local regulations mandate the implementation
of ground-water monitoring programs at solid waste landfill
facilities. Regulatory requirements vary from state to state
and site to site based on the type of facility, location,
or other factors. Standards vary with respect to monitoring
system design, sampling and analysis activities, and data
evaluations.
Hull's multi-disciplinary team of professionals
can establish and maintain effective ground-water monitoring
programs. Our staff actively participates in professional
organizations, publish and speak publicly on a variety of
technical issues, and monitor and comment on regulations and
policy issues.
Leachate & Wastewater
Both quantity and quality of leachate generated are required
to be monitored at landfills on a periodic basis as part of
the environmental monitoring program. This standard was established
in federal Subtitle D and state regulations. Consequently,
landfill facilities are required to incorporate a leachate
collection and storage system, evaluate various disposal options,
and determine the need to pre-treat the leachate prior to
disposal, regardless of the disposal options.
Air and Landfill Gas
Hull has prepared numerous Explosive Gas Monitoring Plans
(EGMP) for solid waste landfills. Monitoring system designs
include evaluation of complex hydrogeologic conditions, consideration
of potential impact on site access and construction, identification
of the need for automated alarm technologies, and training
for monitoring and reporting. Hull designs and installs many
gas collection and active control systems. We employ gas migration
cutoff systems both as a means of addressing risk of lateral
movement through unsaturated soils and protecting ground water
quality outside the limits of waste.
