Major Brownfield Funding in Ohio is Back!

July 12, 2021

The new state budget includes $500 million for brownfields and underutilized properties! Within the next 90 days, these new programs will be operational through the Ohio Department of Development. Counties are receiving specific allocations and remaining funds will be issued through grants received on a first-come, first-served basis.

Brownfield Remediation Program

  • $350 million allocated for remediation of brownfield sites
    • $1 million anticipated allocation per county totaling $88 million
      • No match required
      • If monies are not spent, they will become available for other projects statewide
    • Remaining funds will be available through grants on a first-come, first-served basis
      • Requires 25% match

Building Demolition & Site Revitalization Fund

  • $150 million allocated for demolition of commercial and residential buildings and revitalization of surrounding properties on sites that are not brownfields
    • $500,000 anticipated allocation per county totaling $44 million
      • No match required
      • If monies are not spent, they will become available for other projects statewide
    • Remaining funds will be available through grants on a first-come, first-served basis
      • Requires 25% match

The budget bill language was very general. As we await more program details, it is prudent to get your priority projects ready. Please let us know if we can help!

Note: Hull experts were pioneers with the Ohio Voluntary Action Program and the Clean Ohio Brownfield Revitalization program. Many at Hull anticipate that these new programs could look similar to the former Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund and Clean Ohio Assistance Fund. Hull helped our clients prepare 75 grants worth over $124 million through those programs. Since then, we have continued to work with our clients through other funding sources to promote environmental remediation and property redevelopment, but we know that this new state funding is welcome news!
